VEER-ZAARA (BOLLYWOOD HINDI INDIAN BLU-RAY MOVIE)

TITLE: VEER-ZAARA

GENRE: ROMANTIC LOVE STORY

LANGUAGE: HINDI

FORMAT: BLU-RAY™

RESOLUTION: 1920X1080P

FRAME RATE: 24 FRAMES PER SECOND

DISC RECORDED IN 50BD DUAL LAYER

MAIN AUDIOS: DTS HD™ MASTER AUDIO UNCOMPRESSED IN 5.1 SURROUND SOUND

MAIN AUDIOS: DOLBY DIGITAL COMPRESSED IN 5.1 SURROUND SOUND

HIGH DEFINITION STANDARD: REC709

SUBTITLES: ENGLISH

ASPECT RATIO: 2.35:1 CINEMASCOPE®

VEER ZAARA a romantic love story. The film's theatrical release ratio of 2.35:1 is maintained accordingly on the Blu-ray transfer. Black levels in the overall picture are deep. You can see the shadow details clearly. The color transfers in REC709 are excellent. On my Optoma HD806™ 1080P DLP projector I turned off the Brilliant Color Technology. I also turned off the Dynamic IRIS and set the manual IRIS to 8, which is the mid-point. On the LG™ Blu-ray side the output was in 1080P @24fps. Two HDMI v1.4 High Speed cables are used, one from Blu-ray player to Yamaha Audio-Video Receiver and the second one from the AVR to the projector. The second cable which is 25 feet long, carried the picture without any alteration in 1080P @24fps to the projector. On the projector's side I set the final Gamma to 3 and Color Temperature to FILM which is close toThe Blu-ray of VEER-ZAARA shows a very clean picture. My projector though in 1.78:1 ratio and with 0.95" DLP DarkChip2™ has a built-in scaling mode for vertical stretch of Letter-boxed picture. A vertical compression anamorphic lens is installed in front of the projector which brings the final picture into Cinemascope ratio. Thus there are no more black bars and the picture size is bigger. The 9 feet wide fixed frame screen in 2.35:1 Cinemascope ratio in my Home Theater is Micro-perforated. Infinity in-wall Front speakers are installed behind the screen. It gives a much better lip-sync and the dialogues are very clear.

Sony and its new Blu Ray

Sony and its new Blu Ray

SONY the market leaders of audio-visual products since the last three decades has added another feather to its crown. Its Blu-ray products has appeared in the market and conquered it. The new Sony Blu-ray Disc player BDP-S370 is a major enhancement over the previous Blu-ray titles and also improves the regular DVD quality. With Precision Cinema Sony India has launched its first sub-Rs.10,000 Blu-ray player for Indian market some days back.

One wonders why people would wish to get a dedicated Blu-ray player since Sony has already slashed its 80GB PS3 price to a mere $399, and at that number, it is pretty hard to say no to one. After all, not only can you update its firmware through the Internet, you can also use it to play games whenever you’re feeling bored. All of that cannot be achieved by even the best standalone Blu-ray player in the market which will also be relatively more expensive than the PS3, but that has not stopped Sony themselves from rolling out yet another player for the masses, the BDP-S370.

The BDP-S370 had amazing provisions like Bonus View (picture-in-picture), which is featured on select new Blu-ray Disc home video releases, and is also BD-Live ready, with an Ethernet port for easy firmware updates and access to Internet-based interactive content features. A firmware update enabling BD-Live is planned later this year. It also features quick start-up mode improving the player’s boot-up time to approximately a few seconds and offers an external port for local storage for BD-Live, allowing users to add an optional flash storage device (sold separately). The BDP-S370 incorporates Sony’s new Precision Cinema HD Upscale technology that converts standard-definition signals (480i) to 1080p and outputs a full HD equivalent resolution signal to 1080p TVs via HDMI. Additionally, the model also adds Sony’s new Precision Drive HD, which helps to detect and correct wobbling discs from three directions, stabilizing playback of bent or scratched Blu-ray Discs and DVDs.

Sony’s strategy in the Blu-ray market is based on promoting hardware growth and software availability simultaneously. Consumers will be able to access Internet video without having to use a computer. BDP-S370 model, which is priced at Rs.9, 990, the model makes a Blu-ray player truly affordable in India. Sony televisions and Blu-ray DVD players function like computers.

The Blu-ray segment has grown at an explosive rate, increasing seven-fold in the last year, touching 1.40 lakh units. Sony expected the size of the Indian Blu-ray player market to be about 5 lakh units by 2011-12. Sony’s marketing strategy is to market Blu-ray players, in India like other DVD players. Sony, other products i.e., PS HT etc. are all Blu-ray compatible. Consumers will be able to access Internet as prices become more affordable for consumers. Sony enjoys a special advantage as it owns 118 of the 500 plus titles available in the Indian market. Sony claims to be the market leader in the Blu-ray software space and nobody has more titles in the Blu-ray format than them.

Sony in India has big plans for Blu-ray technology

Sony in India has big plans for Blu-ray technology marketing and promotion. At the launch of Sony's new Blu-ray disc player in New Delhi, Masaru Tamagawa, managing director, Sony India, announced marketing investment of Rs 10 crore in FY2010. Sony's new Blu-ray player, BDP-S370, will be available at a starting price of Rs 9,990 with a promotional offer that includes free Blu-ray discs of 'Legion' and Michael Jackson's 'This Is It'. Sony, the provider of Blu-ray hardware has tied up with Sony Pictures Home Entertainment for software and content.

Sony's Vaio and Play Station 3 are some of the existing Blu-ray enabled products in the market.

There are many Hollywood titles released in Blu-ray format but Bollywood saw just one release, 'Sawariya' shared Keith Ribeiro, managing director, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.

“Blu-ray is paramount in delivering the best picture and sound quality and is a perfect complement for HDTV, the fastest growing category in consumer electronics,” he explained. The company plans to double the number of software titles to 500 by FY2010.

Yamagawa justifies, “The growth in the LCD market is tremendous and will drive the market of Blu-ray players. In 2010, the LCD market is expected to grow to 3 million units, last year it was 1.6 million and year before when it was launched, it was around 1 million. So, the existing HDTV market is around 6 million. And even if we consider 5 per cent of it for Blu-ray, it will be 300, 000 units, which is a good number.”

“Today the market is around 20,000 units- we plan to capture nearly 60 per cent market in FY10, FY11 and FY12. Sony is poised to take over the market as the new benchmark for next generation of audio-visual entertainment,” said Tamagawa.

Blu-ray products are influenced by software enhancements like Blu-ray disc (BD) Live, enhanced bonus views and interactive features, such as video-on-demand. Users can also watch Internet video content like Youtube, etc. on their televisions through BD players.

Blu-ray discs carry a very high level of encryption, so it is very difficult to copy it. Although it's not fool-proof, shares Ribeiro. “Piracy is promoted due to the cost factor. The technology uses high levels of encryption which cannot be pirated at low cost. We plan to offer a competitive price and will improve on this, to avoid pirated copies.”

"As 3-D is gearing up, we plan to have 3-D soon in Blu-ray. However, the current BD player does not have 3-D hardware or software capability,” shares Tamagawa.

The Blu-ray format can work on high definition (HD) TV only and also requires the content in Blu-ray format. So, be ready to spend not just on BD player (approx. Rs 9,990) or Blu-ray discs (approx Rs 900 to 1,300) but on HDTVs to enjoy better picture, better sound and better entertainment.

About Blu-ray Technology

Blu-ray is the next generation optical disc storage format that is gaining popularity. It was released after the standard DVD format which had superseded the VCD format. Blu-ray technology offers five times greater resolution than standard DVD and offers full HD 1080p picture. It is widely accepted in Japan, US and Europe. Blu-ray disc players are backward compatible, i.e. they are capable of reading DVD and VCD.

Blu-ray faced tough competition from high definition DVD (HD DVD) when it was first launched as HD DVD started off really well. HD DVD primarily promoted by Toshiba, faced a downturn in 2008, when most of the studios and distributors shifted to Blu-ray. In February 2008, Toshiba officially announced the discontinuation of manufacturing and development of HD DVD products.

"We carefully assessed the long-term impact of continuing the so-called 'next-generation format war' and concluded that a swift decision will best help the market develop," said Atsutoshi Nishida, president and CEO, Toshiba Corporation, in a statement.

“Our strategy in the Blu-ray market is based on promoting hardware growth and software availability simultaneously,” he added.

Sony was also making its Playstations, HomeTheatre systems and Vaio range of laptops Blu-ray compatible, Mr. Kawamoto said. “Consumers will be able to access Internet video without having to use a personal computer,” Mr. Kawamoto remarked. Referring to the BDP-S370 model, which is priced at Rs.9,990, Mr. Kawamoto said, “The model makes a Blu-ray player truly affordable in India.” “The Blu-ray segment has grown at an explosive rate, increasing seven-fold in the last year, touching 1.40 lakh units,” Mr. Kawamoto said. He said Blu-ray players, like DVD players, “are likely to become commoditised as prices become more affordable for consumers.” Mr. Kawamoto said Sony enjoyed a “special advantage” because it owned 118 of the 500 plus titles that were available in the Indian market. Sony India Commercial Director said the company was the market leader in the Blu-ray software space. “Nobody has more titles in the Blu-ray format than we do,” he claimed
