Arrey O Sambha!
‘Arrey O Sambha! Kitney Aadmi thei?’ was one of the most popular dialogues from Bollywood, the Hindi film industry. It featured in the movie, Sholay, which was made in 70 mm cinemascope, starring superstars Dharmendar and Amitabh Bachhan, delivered a grand viewing experience that turned it into the biggest grosser for almost three decades till the record was broken by Ghajini and more recently 3 Idiots, both Aamir Khan starrers.
The advent of modern Indian cinema has seen the multiplex experience blooming but surprisingly it is difficult or next to impossible to capture hits from the Golden Age of Bollywood at your home box office. Some of the movies are available in VCD and DVDs but they are yet to be chronicled in the medium that delivers the best experience, Blu-ray.
This is in fact surprising as India is a nation where cricket and movies are a religion. The rise of piracy has meant that the titles are available at throwaway prices and none are willing to spend on original Blu-ray technology. Another aspect is the question – what is so great about it? Let us answer that first.
According to Wikipedia:
The name Blu-ray Disc derives from the blue-violet laser used to read the disc. While a standard DVD uses a 650 nanometer red laser, Blu-ray uses a shorter wavelength, a 405 nm blue-violet laser, and allows for almost ten times more data storage than a DVD.
Net-net, the experience of viewing a movie on Blu-ray is far superior to regular DVD and VCD outputs. The video and audio quality has to be seen and heard to be believed. Bollywood movies that are typically musicals with actions, thrills and drama lend themselves wonderfully to this medium which ensures you get the maximum performance from your home theatre.
However, converting the past movies are high-cost activity which is probably the reason why limited number of titles available. Does anybody know where titles from Bollywoods Golden Age can be bought?
