Price of Blu-ray discs may decline in India

The Blu-ray discs market in India is still small however the demand has risen over time as companies increase their offering and carry out aggressive campaigns and price cuts.




The prices of the Blu-ray discs of English movies may fall by as much as 20-25% this Christmas, indicated a senior official at the Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment offers more than 500 Blu-ray English movies in the country.



Sony Pictures Home Entertainment managing director Keith Ribeiro said, "Blu-ray discs attract high customs duty and so, are selling at high prices in India. With lowering Blu-ray players’ prices and their increasing penetration, we see demand for Blu-ray content increasing. This may help in reducing software prices in future."



The company has a market share of 75% in the Blu-ray disc market in India. The Blu-ray discs of English movies are priced at Rs 1,000 and above while Hindi movie Blu-ray disc are priced at Rs 699 onwards.



Companies like Sony, Samsung and LG have been promoting Blu-ray players and also reduced the prices of upto 40%. The affordable Blu-ray disc players are priced between Rs 9,000-10,000.
